Darien Vaughn, professionally known as D.Vaughn The Illest, is a hip-hop and jazz artist. He is from Flint, Michigan and grew up with a malicious teaching of hip-hop history. Vaughn has been influenced by the “old school” so much that it shows in his choice of music and lyrical style. Vaughn’s style consists of strong comedic lyrics with a hype delivery and an aggressive tone. As a jazz artist, he is interested in following jazz customs and putting his own twist to it. He began to rhyme at the of age 10 after he heard LL Cool J’s “I’m BAD”. He has been writing rhymes since then, but he never took it serious until he came to Eastern Michigan University and had the opportunity to be linked with the artistic movement known as T.R.I.B.E.
Vaughn has been influenced as an artist by: Busta Rhymes, Rakim, Tech N9ne, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-Cube, The Wu-Tang Clan, N.W.A, Public Enemy, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, and KRS-One. He is also a stage actor/performer and is apart of The National Thespian Society. Currently at Eastern Michigan University, Vaughn is in pursuit of a degree under the fields of Comprehensive Communications, Media, and Theatre Arts. He is an also a Adidas Advocate, which influenced the name of his first mixtape, Three Stripes & a Microphone (will be released soon).
“I rap for the guys who are just regular guys the average kid you see walking through school or on the street. The kid who doesn’t necessarily smoke weed, the kids who don’t carry guns, the kids who never really had any real struggles he just takes life by the face and just enjoys It. I rap for fun when you take something too serious it doesn’t work out I’m just making music for everyone to enjoy.”
